The Puppet Master

Image
Puppet Master The narrow, high-walled passage swallowed the sound of my boot scraping a broken cobblestone, the echo sharp in the dry air. Above, a sliver of unforgiving sunlight cut down, carving deep shadows where the damp, mossy scent of the gully was now replaced by the smell of dust and ancient stone. I paused, looking not just at my gloved hand—the leather scuffed from my descent, but at what was attached to it. Thin, nearly invisible lines, like high-tensile wires , stretched from the articulated cuff on my wrist and disappeared into the air above the path. I tracked them with my eyes until they converged on a small, stone figure standing motionless in the centre of the walkway. It was a crude marionette , barely a foot tall, carved from the same pale, cracked stone as the surrounding walls. Dressed in a simple tunic, its blank, oval face held a radiating sense of expectant waiting. Its arms were held out, palms up. I held the strings. Yet, the feeling was not one of cont...

Podcast 02: On the Edge of the Scar

Video Description

In a desperate bid for survival, the crew of the battered Subi spacecraft finds themselves in critical condition, exhausted and low on energy, deep within the hazardous Necropolis Corridor.

Katcha, the highly intelligent cyborg spoodle, takes command, identifying an unmapped anomaly – a faint energy signature at the edge of Uncharted Space – as their last hope for revitalisation. Faced with an exorbitant demand from a freight vessel that would cost them all their remaining credits and cargo, Katcha determines that "time is a luxury they no longer possess".

A slingshot maneuver towards the unstable anomaly is their final option, a high-stakes gamble with a "precarious 45% chance of severe structural damage" to the Subi. Katcha initiates the maneuver, sending the Subi violently bucking as alarms shriek. The immediate success of the slingshot is expected. Still, the actual suspense hinges on "what comes after" and the anomaly's ability to provide the vital energy and stability needed for the crew and ship to endure. This desperate plunge highlights their fierce resolve, as "quitting doesn't even exist in our lexicon".

Video Script

Astra:

Welcome back to "Space Tourist Chronicles," I'm Astra, joined once more by Nexus. He's just finished analysing the latest data from the Subi and assessing the crew's dire predicament.

Nexus:

Thank you, Astra. For Katcha and Subi’s crew, "desperate" is definitely the word of the cycle. The latest report shows them on the brink, forced to choose between financial disaster and a genuine leap of faith.

Astra:

Indeed. That "Energy Critical" status, Subi's flickering interface, BK and JB barely conscious – it's a dire picture. The congestion on Delta-Nine has truly bled them dry. However, let's discuss the "slingshot" maneuver. It's a high-risk, high-reward gambit. What are your initial thoughts on their chances of surviving it?

Nexus:

While explicit success data is absent, a clear red flag, Katcha, the Cyborg Spoodle, is renowned for strategic intellect. Subi, despite "erratic flickering," is built for "physical capability and protection." Their "human-machine-animal symbiosis" isn't mere idle gossip; it's their core operational doctrine.

Astra:

So, do their combined unique abilities give them an edge? Even with a stated 45% chance of structural damage for a direct approach?

Nexus:

Precisely. The "slingshot" implies a more sophisticated, nuanced execution than a mere direct burn. They're leveraging the massive gravitational forces of those Delta-Nine freighters, using minimal energy for maximum velocity, then a precise burst to slingshot them *into* the anomaly's field. That reduces direct exposure time to the "black scar's" chaotic fringes. If anyone can execute a maneuver demanding such "extreme precision," it's Subi under Katcha's guidance.

Astra:

That's a compelling point. It's not just about raw power, but about finesse and the deep, almost intuitive connection between Katcha and Subi. So, you're leaning towards them surviving the *maneuver* itself?

Nexus:

Yes, I am. The narrative's tension builds precisely because they *will* attempt this impossible feat, and likely succeed in the immediate execution. The drama isn't just whether they sling-shot, but what happens next. The fundamental uncertainty isn't the slingshot's success, but the "unknown" for "energy top-up" and "crew stabilisation" once they reach that "unmapped anomaly."

Astra:

Ah, the "presence of hospitality" on the fringes of Uncharted Space. A tantalising thought for a crew in their state. But even if the slingshot works, they're still in the Necropolis Corridor – "dense fields of derelict ship hulls and temporal distortions." The slingshot might get them *to* the anomaly, but it doesn't get them *out* of that particular cosmic nightmare.

Nexus:

Surviving the slingshot is merely the initial act in this desperate play. My analysis suggests the slingshot is not about guaranteed safety, but rather rapid, desperate access to a potential solution. Their survival ultimately hinges on the anomaly's true nature and its ability to provide the vital revitalisation Subi, BK, and JB so desperately need to continue their journey.

Astra:

A fascinating take, Nexus. So, it's not a question of *if* they attempt the slingshot, but rather, *what comes after*. The suspense truly builds from here. We'll be keeping a close eye on the *Subi’s* next transmission. Stay tuned, listeners!
