The Waiting Room and New Possibilities

  I am waiting and maintaining my presence For centuries, artists have shown what it means to wait. Their works capture quiet, tense moments in which every gesture and expression suggests deep emotions just below the surface. One of my favourite artists who explored the theme of waiting is Honoré Daumier. His lithographs and paintings of third-class carriage passengers or people in court waiting rooms are especially insightful. He captures patience, exhaustion, and resignation in their faces and postures, turning waiting into a thoughtful reflection on human life. When I made my digital watercolour, I wanted to capture the feeling of waiting, just as artists before me have done. I used bright oranges and golds to create energy and contrast with the central figure, who appears deep in thought. We have to learn to inhabit the pause rather than just trying to leap over it. Maybe we will find what we lost

"Do you remember the cottage?" she said.

"I do," he said. "The dust in the air, the way the light made it glow like gold... It felt alive, didn’t it?"

"It was alive," she said. "Because we were. Everything we touched felt real. It wasn’t about what we had; it was about what we dreamed."

"And we dreamed of this," he said, gesturing vaguely around them. "A life so vast, so full, it would drown out any doubt."

"But it hasn’t, has it?" she said. "The doubt is louder now than it ever was. It’s deafening."

"I hear it too," he said. "Every time I look at what we’ve built, it whispers that we’ve lost something more precious than we could ever gain."

"We lost ourselves," she said. "Or maybe we just left ourselves behind, somewhere back there, in the cottage, on that rug."

"Do you think we can go back?" he said.

"To the cottage?" she said. "No. The cottage is gone. But we can go back to what it meant. To what we were."

"And what were we?" he said.

"Believers," she said. "Not in wealth, not in power, but in each other. In that life we could create together, not apart."

"It’s strange," he said. "We’ve climbed so high, yet it feels like the ground is further away than ever."

"Because we stopped touching it," she said. "Stopped feeling it beneath our feet. And now, here we are, suspended in a life that feels... weightless."

"Weightless and empty," he said.

"But it doesn’t have to stay that way," she said.

"Do you really believe that?" he said.

"I do," she said. "Because I still hear the song. Do you?"

"The one from the cottage?" he said. "I thought I’d forgotten it. But now... now I think it’s been playing all along."

"It has," she said. "We just stopped listening. But if we can hear it again, we can follow it. It’s never too late."

"And if we follow it?" he said.

"Maybe we’ll find what we lost," she said. "Not the past, but the part of ourselves we left there."

"Together?" he said.

"Always together," she said.



Our Fortunate Lives

The path ahead may be uncertain, but it is filled with promise as we enter the unknown. We recognise that the search for meaning is a lifelong journey intricately connected to the ever-changing circumstances of our fortunate lives.

Drifting Clouds

  Drifting Clouds between Hong Kong and Guangzhou When I was suspended in that atmospheric corridor between Hong Kong and Guangzhou, I was struck by how the sky felt like a turbulent yet tender expanse. I wanted my watercolour strokes to blend and blur on the paper, mimicking the ever-shifting weather patterns of the region. That is of moisture-laden clouds dissolve effortlessly into brilliant, open patches of blue. For me, this piece is an impressionistic echo of that flight. I was trying to capture that fleeting, weightless moment of looking out into a vast horizon, right when the heavens feel both endlessly deep and close enough to touch.   The Inhabited Pause "Waiting is not merely the passage of time; it is an active, often uncomfortable internal labour." In Waiting Room Portrait, I explore the profound tension of maintaining one’s presence within the "in-between." Drawing inspiration from the quiet, heavy resignation in Honoré Daumier’s waiting rooms, this digital watercolour seeks to transform the modern waiting experience from a static period of boredom into a vivid, spiritual practice. The central figure is an anchor of introspection amidst a whirling, chaotic background of light and colour. By utilising thick, expressive brushstrokes, I’ve constructed a pose—hand to chin, face obscured—that captures the weight of self-reflection. While the figure remains grounded on a dark, solid base, the palette of searing magentas and electric purples suggests an internal landscape that is anything but silent.
